A stochastic model of mortality, fertility, and human capital investment
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper examines the relationship between fertility and human capital investment and its implications for economic growth, focusing on the effects of declining mortality. Unlike the existing literature, this paper stresses the role of uncertainty about the number of surviving children. If the marginal utility of a surviving child is convex, then there will be a precautionary demand for children. As the mortality rate and thus, uncertainty fall, this demand decreases. Furthermore, lower mortality encourages educational investment in children. The key result is that this empirically observed quality–quantity trade-off is realized only if uncertainty is incorporated into individual’s optimization problem. D 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. A dynamic model of labor supply and fertility with Ben-Porath human capital accumulation
The aim of this study is to explain two remarkable changes that occurred in the female labor market between the 1970s and the 1990s using a human capital investment model: (1) labor supply of married women has been more compatible with having children and (2) married women have faced higher wage growth rates as a result of higher participation. To this end, this paper constructs a dynamic stoch...
متن کاملEstimating Optimum Value of Investment and Human Capital in the R&D Sector of Iran Using an Augmented Endogenous Growth Model
This article intends to estimate the optimal value of investment and human capital in R&D sector of Iranian economy using an augmented endogenous growth model. To do so, two issues have been studied. First, an endogenous growth model has been extended to include investment in R&D as an independent variable. In the framework of this model, in order to determine the optimal value of investment an...
متن کاملSecond-best public debt with human capital externalities
This paper studies optimal public debt in a dynastic model with human capital externalities that cause human capital investment (fertility) to be below (above) its socially optimal level. By reducing fertility and raising human capital investment, the optimal debt can exceed 10% of output for plausible parameterizations. r 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. متن کاملA Stochastic Model for Water Resources Management
Irrigation water management is crucial for agricultural production and livelihood security in many regions and countries throughout the world. Over the past decades, controversial and conflictladen water-allocation issues among competing municipal, industrial and agricultural interests have raised increasing concerns. Particularly, growing population, varying natural conditions and shrinking wa...
متن کاملPensions with endogenous and stochastic fertility∗
This paper studies the design of a pay-as-you-go social security system in an overlapping generations model where fertility is in part stochastic and in part determined through capital investment. If investments are publicly observable, pension benefits must be linked positively to the level of investment, and payroll taxes negatively to the number of children. The outcome is characterized by f...
